The Clunk In The Trunk. The Big Rubber Band. The Lurchy Boingy Boingies. Whatever you call it, the Subaru drivetrain is a bit sloppy. The reason? Bushings.
See, your grandma hates vibration. No, stay with me here. You're going to find a lot of things on the car where Subaru used something squishy where something stiff would have been better for performance. This is because your grandma hates feeling every little bump in the road, the vibration of the tires, and the shaking of the engine and she really hates hearing gear whine. Sadly, your mom hates those things too. I know it's hard to believe, but Subaru is actually trying to sell cars to your mom and grandma, not to you. So you get squishy bits all over the car to keep mom and grandma happy, even though it makes you sad. Most of these squishy bits are in the form of bushings, which are really just little chunks of rubber or poly that go between two metal pieces to keep the vibration down. The problem is that soft squishy bits not only keep the vibration down, they really kill handling and performance.
There are a LOT of bushings in your drivetrain. Engine mounts, tranny mount, diff mounts, crossmember bushings, trailing link bushings, transverse link bushings, the list goes on and on. Any time you step on the gas, pull your foot off the gas, or change what the engine is doing at all, all of those bushings squish or un-squish. If you've ever shifted too hard and heard a clunk or thump in your trunk, it's because of bushings. If you've ever felt like you had to stretch or relax a big rubber band to make a smooth shift, it's because of bushings. If you've ever pogo-hopped your way through a drive through like a noob, it's because of bushings. Well, unless you're a noob.
The TiC Stage 2 Driveline package takes over where the Stage 1 package stops and makes a good thing even better. Just like the rear diff, the transmission and the engine itself are fastened to the chassis using big blocks of soft rubber. The tranny crossmember itself sets on narrow little bushings that are soft. Literally like chewing gum soft. They've all got to go. You're getting Group N Engine Mounts, a Group N Tranny Mount, and TiC Tranny Crossmember bushings. This really locks down the transmission and engine. You get the same benefits as Stage 1 (less lurch, less slop, less bounce, better feel) only kicked up a notch. You'll love it (and the package saves you a few bucks which you'll love too).
What you get:
- Subaru STi Group N Engine Mounts
- Subaru STi Group N Tranny Mount
- TiC Tranny Crossmember Bushings
Fitment is for 1997-2010 Impreza (L, RS, 2.5i, WRX, STi, S202, 22b)
This part is kind of important. You need to let us know what transmission you have because the Group N transmission mount comes in two flavors; 5MT and 6MT. |
